The Effects Of Alcohol And Its Effects On Children

Alcohol plays a major role in today’s society. Everywhere we look, something is advertising alcohol. Alcohol is consumed for many purposes, whether it be for a celebration, out of boredom, or a way to relax. Alcohol has very damaging effects. Not only does alcohol cause self-inflicted diseases, but it harms unborn fetuses as well. Many women drink alcohol before they realize they are pregnant. One of the most severe effects alcohol causes an unborn fetus is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, FAS, is a condition in a child that results from alcohol exposure during the mother’s pregnancy. The problem caused by Fetal Alcohol Syndrome varies from child to child, but defects caused by FAS are irreversible (Mayoclinic Staff). Exposure to alcohol before birth can cause a variety of different problems. Not only does exposure cause severe birth defects but certain people are more at risk than others for developing FAS. Age, race, social class, and occupation play a big part in determining who is more at risk. Yet Fetal Alcohol Syndrome does not discriminate; everyone who drinks alcohol while pregnant is at risk. Symptoms of FAS are present not only at birth, but also during gestation. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is known as one of the leading preventable causes of mental retardation and birth defects. FAS is a lifelong, physically and mentally disabling condition. It affects every aspect of an individual’s life and the lives of the people around them.
